A Resolution in Opposition to Proposal One

Michigan’s Law of Unintended Consequences

A resolution offered urging the rejection of a statewide ballot initiative, Proposal One, to legalize for medical purposes the use of marijuana.

WHEREAS, Marijuana is a dangerous narcotic, whose use is illegal under state and federal law; and,

WHEREAS, Approval of such a proposal will lead to unintended and dangerous consequences for Michigan and its kids; and,

WHEREAS, Medical experts warn there is no health benefit to smoking, smoking in a public place or taking a drug without a prescription from a doctor; and,

WHEREAS, Law enforcement officials warn that Proposal One could lead to a dangerous increase in the access to and use of marijuana among young people and the general population, that its legalization increases violent crime, and that a deliberate loophole permits a “medical marijuana” defense against criminal charges in court; and,

WHEREAS, Concerned parents warn of the potential of smoking clubs and pot shops opening in neighborhoods throughout the state, as has happened under California’s similar law, potentially putting marijuana in the hands of school children; and,

WHEREAS, Taxpayers warn of a costly new bureaucracy to license marijuana users, that will result in vast new regulatory expenses at a time when Michigan’s economy is struggling, the state budget is in the red; and,

WHEREAS, A decade ago, voters in California approved a proposal to legalize so-called “medical” marijuana, and today, even the proposal’s most vocal supporters admit the California law has resulted in “chaos,” “pot dealers in storefronts” and millions of dollars being dumped “into the criminal black market;” and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s Proposal One is a law of unintended and dangerous consequences,

RESOLVED, That on this day, Vote No on Proposal One Coalition joins with the more than 20 medical, law enforcement, parental and taxpayer groups in saying “NO” to Proposal One.
